The underlying principle of the radio frequency plasma probe is presented. The resonance properties of the probe's equivalent circuit with and without external magnetic field are analyzed. The admittance of the equivalent circuit is shown to posses a pole at the sheath hybrid frequency and a zero at the upper hybrid frequency. The phase of the admittance changes signature to become negative, in the range of frequency between the pole and the zero. Some significant experiments using radio frequency plasma probe for ionospheric research are briefly described.
